Two of AI's favorite K-beauty brands are everywhere. Dr.Jart+ is barely stocked.
When we put sixty skincare questions to four AI assistants, the two most-cited K-beauty brands are Anua (36 mentions) and COSRX (34) — and both are widely stocked, on 13 and 9 of our channels. Dr.Jart+ ranks fourth with 25 citations. It appears on three. The brands AI recommends most and the brands our shelves carry most are not the same list.
A Hyped brand is loud where people ask for advice and quiet on the shelves they actually shop. This week the clearest one is Dr.Jart+. Across sixty skincare questions put to Perplexity, Gemini, OpenAI and Claude, it is the fourth-most-cited K-beauty brand — 25 mentions — a household name from the Cicapair generation.
Then the shelves. The two brands cited above it are the reassuring case: Anua (36 citations) turns up on 13 of our channels, COSRX (34) on 9. Cited and stocked, the system working as you'd expect. Dr.Jart+ breaks it — cited nearly as often, it appears on just three.
Why the top is aligned and the fourth isn't
Anua and COSRX have converted recommendation into distribution: the AI names them and the buyers stock them. Dr.Jart+ carries the recognition and the citation weight of a canonical brand, but in our weekly samples it charts narrowly — a prestige-and-department-store profile rather than a specialist-and-mass one. The AI knows the brand; our shelves mostly don't rank it.
It's not alone in the gap
The same shape repeats down the list. LANEIGE draws 15 citations but appears on 6 channels; ETUDE, 20 citations on 4. Several brands AI treats as canonical K-beauty are, on our shelves, narrower than their reputation. Recommendation reach and retail reach are drifting apart, and the Hyped score is the distance between them.
What we are not claiming
Citations are a snapshot — sixty queries across four assistants on one date. They measure what models say, not what sells or what's good. "Three channels" means three of the retail best-seller charts we sample this week, not that you can't buy Dr.Jart+ elsewhere. But when a brand the AI reaches for is a brand our shelves reach for three times, that gap is the story — and it is the kind only a shelf-by-shelf archive can measure.
