Anua vs COSRX: AI calls it even. The shelf doesn't.

Ask four AI assistants sixty skincare questions and the two most-cited K-beauty brands come back nearly tied: Anua 36, COSRX 34. But that near-tie hides two different brands. Anua reaches 13 of our channels to COSRX's 9 — wider. COSRX ranks #18 on average where it charts, to Anua's #28 — deeper. Breadth versus depth.

The two brands AI recommends most for K-beauty are, this week, almost indistinguishable in the model's eyes: Anua drew 36 citations, COSRX 34, across four assistants and sixty questions. If you only had the AI leaderboard, you would call it a coin flip. Our shelf data says they are running two different races.

Anua is winning breadth

Anua appears on 13 of the 18 channels we track — the widest reach of any K-beauty brand this week, and reach rank #1. COSRX reaches 9. On the question of "how many doors is this brand through," Anua has pulled clearly ahead: it has cleared prestige, specialist and marketplace buyers alike.

COSRX is winning depth

Flip to rank quality and the order reverses. Where COSRX charts, it charts high — an average best rank of #18 across its channels, against Anua's #28. COSRX is on fewer shelves but sits nearer the top of each one. That is the signature of a brand with a few deeply established hero products (the snail mucin, the pimple patch) rather than a broad catalog spreading across doors.

Why the AI can't see the difference — and why it matters

Citations measure how often a brand is named as an answer; they flatten breadth and depth into one number, so two very different shelf profiles look identical. For a buyer or an investor, the difference is the whole story: Anua's risk is spreading thin, COSRX's is concentration. For a brand plotting its next move, Anua's playbook is "defend the breadth," COSRX's is "widen without losing the rank." The AI's tie is the beginning of the question, not the answer.

The limits, stated first

AI citations are a snapshot of sixty queries on one date — recommendation surface, not sales or quality. Channel reach and average rank come from our weekly top-ranking samples, whose depth varies (top 20 to top 195), so "average rank" is comparable within our sample, not an absolute. This is a head-to-head of two brands' positions, not a verdict on which is better.

AI citations = mentions across four assistants over 60 K-beauty questions on one collection date; recommendation surface, not sales. Channel reach and average best rank come from weekly top-ranking samples (depth varies, top 20 to top 195). Lower average rank = higher placement. This compares two brands' positions, not their quality.
